At its meeting today, the city council decided to carry out two building construction projects.
Interior refurbishment of the "Rappelkiste" daycare centre*, Auerswalder Straße 119
The "Rappelkiste "* daycare centre will undergo extensive structural and technical modernisation to provide better conditions for children and teaching staff in future. The capacity will remain unchanged. The aim is to make the centre fit for the future and significantly reduce energy consumption.
Plans include replacing the windows, renovating the roof and installing a photovoltaic system. A new air-to-water heat pump will provide most of the heating in future. The existing gas condensing boiler will remain in operation to cover peak loads. This will reduce energy costs and make better use of renewable energies.
The daycare centre will also have a new external escape staircase. A loggia area with a roof will offer additional opportunities for playing and spending time outdoors in future and will link the building more closely with the outside area.
Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2026, with completion scheduled for November 2027. The total costs amount to around 2.3 million euros, which will be borne entirely by the city of Chemnitz.
Renovation of the after-school care centre building at Kirchner primary school, Wittgensdorf
The existing building of the Kirchner primary school in Wittgensdorf, Chemnitzer Straße 4, is being completely refurbished inside, including the renewal of the technical equipment, windows and doors as well as the design of the outdoor facilities. The growing demand for after-school care places in the immediate vicinity of the school is to be met with modern and functional rooms.
The "Flohzirkus" after-school care centre is currently used by 120 children and is therefore already 117% full. In future, the after-school centre will be available for up to 150 children from the school.
The refurbishment includes a reorganisation of the rooms, including group rooms, homework rooms, multi-purpose and craft rooms, a children's kitchen, quiet rooms and the necessary rooms for the after-school care centre management and staff. The ground floor will be made barrier-free, including a central lift that can be added in the future. The outdoor area will also be modernised: play equipment, a balancing course, quiet zones and open spaces will create room for exercise and recreation.
The direct connection to the school building allows the children a safe and short route after school and at the same time makes it easier to organise after-school care.
The refurbishment of the existing building conserves resources and reduces environmental impact, as there is no need for a new building. At the same time, the city of Chemnitz will have a building that can be used in the long term and meets the current requirements for after-school care and child-friendliness.
The total costs of the project amount to around 4.3 million euros, of which around 978,000 euros are subsidised. The City of Chemnitz's own contribution amounts to around 3.33 million euros.
Preparatory work has been underway since May 2024, including the preparation of the nursery garden. Construction work will begin in January 2026 and should be completed by July 2027, with commissioning scheduled for October 2027.
