On 5 January 2023, the winning design for the "Kunst am Bau - Kooperationsschule Chemnitz" competition was selected by a jury of experts. The winner was the "Glass Balloon" design by Nina Schuiki from Berlin.

Due to the lower demand for school buildings for the Chemnitz school network, the construction of a new school was postponed and the city council decided to locate the co-operation school in an existing school building.

The winning design was realised in summer 2025 in the Südlicher Sonnenberg primary school.

On 10 July 2020, the winning design for the competition "Kunst am Bau" - Oberschule am Hartmannplatz was announced. The winning design was "Birkenhain/Festwiese" by Antje Schiffers and Thomas Sprenger from Berlin.

The design was created for the four-form entry secondary school at Hartmannplatz, which was being planned at the time. The central break hall, which also serves as the school's assembly hall, was designed in a special way. A two-stage "Art in Architecture" competition was organised for this. Initially, artists and designers were able to apply to take part. From the 281 submissions from many countries, a jury selected ten applicants who were asked to present their ideas in the form of concrete projects.

The secondary school opened at the start of the 2023/2024 school year.
