Justice of the Peace

Justice of the Peace is the official title of arbitrators in the Free State of Saxony. They perform their duties on a voluntary basis in their spare time.

Justices of the peace are elected for a period of 5 years by the city council and confirmed and sworn in by the president of the local court. The management of the local court also supervises the justices of the peace.

Arbitration centres

The city of Chemnitz is divided into 6 arbitration districts. A justice of the peace is responsible for each of these districts.

The arbitration districts have consultation hours on the first Tuesday of every month from 6 to 7 pm in the Technical City Hall, Friedensplatz 1, Room B0101/2.

Corruption prevention

An ombudsman has been in place in Chemnitz since 2007 following a decision by the city council. This ombudsman is tasked with confidentially investigating reports of bribery, the acceptance of benefits and corruption, informing the city's anti-corruption coordinator of substantiated cases of suspicion and advising the Lord Mayor on how to proceed.In addition to this external independent officer, a municipal employee will be appointed as anti-corruption coordinator to organise internal administrative measures to prevent and combat corruption.

Crime Prevention Council

On the initiative of the City Council, the City of Chemnitz established a Crime Prevention Council back in 1998. It consists of the Mayor for Law, Safety and Environment, the Head of the Police Directorate, the Mayor for Social Affairs, Youth and Family, Health, Culture and Sport and the Head of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The task of the Prevention Council is to develop effective approaches to the prevention and avoidance of criminal offences.
