The public green spaces in the city of Chemnitz provide space for relaxation and leisure activities. They are used for sporting activities and serve as a venue for many events and private gatherings. Chemnitz boasts an extensive green space network that has been carefully developed over the past 100 years, characterised in particular by Küchwaldpark, the Schlossteichanlagen and the Stadtpark.

The urban area of Chemnitz comprises a total forest area of around 3,280 ha. Of this, approximately 1,840 ha is state-owned forest (Sachsenforst), approximately 860 ha is municipal forest and approximately 580 ha is forest owned by other entities. The Chemnitz Lower Forestry Authority is responsible for a wide range of tasks relating to privately and corporately owned woodland. The Chemnitz municipal woodland covers an area of approximately 1,400 ha.

As well as its parks and woodlands, the city of Chemnitz offers its residents further leisure and recreational opportunities in the form of 17,450 allotment gardens. Compared with other green spaces, allotment gardens offer great scope for individual design.
