Waste disposal in the urban area

The administrative districts and independent cities are responsible for a functioning waste management system, especially in the household sector, as so-called public waste management organisations (örE). As the lower waste authority, the City of Chemnitz must monitor the proper handling of hazardous waste and non-hazardous waste in the city area. This applies to the commercial sector, in particular companies with waste management facilities, as well as the private sector (handling of end-of-life vehicles, waste wood, illegal dumping, the Ordinance on Waste Recovery and Disposal Records and much more).

The City of Chemnitz's waste disposal and city cleaning company (ASR) collects and transports all household waste such as residual waste/household waste, organic waste, paper and bulky waste for the City of Chemnitz.

The ASR also operates the recycling centres free of charge for the city's residents in accordance with the applicable waste statutes and waste fee statutes. It also disposes of light and recyclable materials as part of the Dual System Germany.

The disposal of used glass via the three-part depot containers (white, brown, green) is carried out by a private company at the 366 depot container sites/recyclable material islands in the city area.

You will almost always find a used clothing container at these locations, which is also provided by ASR for the proper and environmentally friendly disposal of used textiles or shoes.

Chemnitz Waste Association

The Chemnitz Waste Management Association (AWVC), of which the city of Chemnitz, the Erzgebirgskreis district and the Mittelsachsen district are members, is responsible for the disposal of all waste collected for disposal. The association is also responsible for the aftercare of former landfills, such as the "Weißer Weg" landfill, for a period of around 30 years.

Public relations work in the form of waste counselling is particularly important for the dissemination of important knowledge and the further development of an environmentally conscious approach to waste. The three specialist departments (ASR, AWVC and the Environmental Agency) carry out this work competently and free of charge. The waste management concept forms the long-term basis for guaranteeing waste disposal security for the city of Chemnitz within the framework of the distribution of responsibilities of the örE.

Specialised waste management companies

The new register of specialised waste management companies, which is made available to the public via ZKS-Abfall, makes it possible to search for certified specialised waste management companies and primary treatment facilities in accordance with the Act on the Placing on the Market, Taking Back and Environmentally Sound Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (ElektroG). Various selection and input fields allow different search variants.

The register does not currently contain all certified facilities, but only those whose current certificate was issued after 1 June 2018.

Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste from private households may not be disposed of with residual waste. It must be disposed of at the recycling centres of the waste disposal and city cleaning company of the city of Chemnitz (ASR) or at the small delivery point of the Chemnitz waste management association (AWVC).
