Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Chemnitz
Equality is an issue that affects everyone - in everyday life, at work, in the family and, of course, in our city. This is where many things that shape our daily lives are decided: How family-friendly our environment is, whether there are good childcare facilities, how safe we feel in public spaces or how equitable access to education, work and leisure is.
Equality means that everyone should have the same opportunities to shape their lives in a self-determined way - regardless of role expectations or social barriers. This not only strengthens cohesion, but also makes our city more liveable and fairer for everyone.
Franziska Herold has been the new Equal Opportunities Officer for the City of Chemnitz since 1 May 2025.
As Equal Opportunities Officer, she is committed to ensuring that all people in our city have the same opportunities and rights.
You are cordially invited to contact Ms Herold with your ideas, concerns or experiences.
Equality Action Plan of the City of Chemnitz 2026
The City of Chemnitz's Equal Opportunities Officer has presented the 2026 Gender Equality Action Plan to the City Council. This is the first comprehensive strategic basis for municipal equality work in Chemnitz.
The action plan addresses key social challenges and bundles concrete measures in four fields of action: Participation of women in politics and business, equal opportunities for girls and boys, prevention of violence and perception and understanding of roles.
The aim is to make structural inequalities visible, reduce them in a targeted manner and further strengthen equality as a task for society as a whole. The measures are aimed at the entire urban society and focus on long-term, effective changes.
The Equal Opportunities Officer works together with:
- Women's organisations, initiatives and associations
- Independent organisations

Directive on the financial promotion of gender equality
The guideline for the financial promotion of gender equality applies to the granting of subsidies from the budget of the Equal Opportunities Officer for Women and Men, regulates the administrative procedure and makes statements on the eligibility of institutions, projects and measures for funding. The specifics here lie in the actual equality of women and men, which is a mandatory task of the municipality based on Section 2 (1) SächsGemO. The funding and operation of a women's centre in Chemnitz as well as project funding for gender equality is carried out within the framework of this guideline.
Recommendations for gender-equitable language
In 2022, the Equal Opportunities Officer drew up recommendations for gender-equitable language in correspondence, publications and forms at Chemnitz City Council.
Pia Hamann: "... I would like us in the city of Chemnitz to cultivate a language culture that is low in discrimination in order to avoid misunderstandings and not to disparage, hurt or simply forget people. In our thinking, writing and speaking, we should address women and men, people with different gender identities, young and old, people with or without disabilities - in short, all people in all their diversity."
