Basketball court in Konkordiapark completed
The new basketball court in Konkordiapark can now be used. It was opened on Friday evening, 21 February. The grand opening of the Capital of Culture project in Konkordiapark is planned for the second quarter of 2025.
The new court was built in accordance with the requirements of the FIBA World Basketball Association so that international tournaments can also be organised. The existing court was moved slightly and also renovated. A special vinyl surface was laid on both courts. A surface of this type has not yet been used outdoors in Chemnitz. It allows the two surfaces to be customised with motifs specially designed for the

Inspired by the numerous measures in preparation for the European Capital of Culture 2025, great importance was attached to artistic design when realising the basketball court and the measure thus contributes to the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
A seating grandstand for up to 80 spectators was built on the new basketball court. The existing, shifted court was enclosed with four-metre-high ball catch fences. Both pitches were each fitted with a lighting mast so that they can also be used in the evening. An existing concrete lounger is to be reinstalled for resting. Eight bicycle racks, two additional benches in the area of the existing pitch and six litter bins will also be installed on the site.
The newly installed public drinking fountain has been positioned so that it is easily accessible for both the new playing field areas and the existing Konkordiapark. The paths to the two playing fields and the areas around them were paved with concrete paving. Two raised beds were planted to break up the areas. A total of eight new trees and 26 shrubs were planted.
Work on the construction of an additional basketball court in Konkordiapark began in June 2024. Completion of the facility was originally scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024. Due to the short-term imposition of a tonnage restriction in the Matthesstraße - Schloßstraße area, the planned construction site logistics had to be completely reorganised. This led to an eight-week extension to the construction period.
The work was carried out by the construction company Phönix-Bau GmbH from Aue. Construction supervision was carried out by sLandArt Stefan Leiste Landschaftsarchitektur bdla from Chemnitz. The construction costs totalled around 1 million euros.
The project is being subsidised by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts. This measure is co-financed by tax revenue on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.
Background
The new basketball court in Konkordiapark is a measure that has emerged from civic engagement and is supported and realised by the City of Chemnitz.
The project is financed on the one hand by the City of Chemnitz's own funds, but also to a large extent by state funds from the Free State of Saxony. Members of the Chemnitz state parliament lobbied for the funding in Dresden so that funds totalling 800,000 euros could be called up from the Free State of Saxony for this project, which is closely linked to the Capital of Culture title.
