We constantly encounter new things in all areas of life: lifelong learning becomes a matter of course.

Twice a year, the Adult Education Centre (VHS) programme provides information about the wide range of educational opportunities on offer with courses, events and lectures in areas such as politics, history, health education, natural sciences, vocational training, IT, languages and countries, culture and artistic design.

The facility also sees itself as a place of communication and integration, where people of different origins and social status and of all ages meet and enter into dialogue with each other.

Winter semester courses can be booked online from 16 June

Courses can also be booked online

On Monday, 16 June, Chemnitz Adult Education Centre will put its programme for the 2025 winter semester online. From 10 a.m., all courses between 1 September 2025 and 6 March 2026 can be searched for and booked at www.vhs-chemnitz.de.

The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre's winter semester begins on Monday, 1 September 2025. Eleven weeks before the start of the semester, interested parties can browse the VHS's autumn/winter programme for their desired courses and register for them directly. There is a very large selection of 581 courses from six subject areas. The programme is constantly being updated and expanded with new events.

Topics from current research

The new "Science up close" series has already met with enormous interest in the current summer semester. The programme will continue next semester with new exciting topics from current research. The aim is to look under the bonnets of self-driving cars, scrutinise modern materials with an electron microscope, explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence in education and take a look back at the use of computers in the GDR.

At all its events, the adult education centre brings together people with similar interests, even if they sometimes have different opinions. The educational excursions in particular encourage encounters. Destinations include the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig and the memorial site of the former Hoheneck women's prison near Stollberg. In keeping with the European Capital of Culture year Chemnitz 2025, Chemnitz city walks and an educational tour along the Purple Path in the Ore Mountains are also part of the programme.

Understanding each other - through language and the art of listening

Language creates understanding. Foreign languages facilitate understanding and the exchange of cultures. Because there can never be enough of them, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is expanding its already extensive range of language courses. 28 foreign languages can be learnt in the coming winter semester. New additions to the programme are Aramaic and Greenlandic. The focus will be on Georgia - with a language course and two lectures.

If language is one side of communication, then listening is the other. However, a wealth of information is often accompanied by limited attention. That's why the upcoming semester will also focus on "The art of listening" in the lecture of the same name by renowned educational psychologist Professor Margarete Imhof from Mainz on 2 December 2025.
