Today, Chemnitz is once again a competitive technology centre. In terms of growth in the number of employees in research and development, the city is at the forefront in a Germany-wide comparison.

The patent density is far above the national average. This is due in part to 50 research and development institutions as well as an efficient university landscape. Chemnitz University of Technology and institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institutes for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU and for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS, the Saxon Textile and Research Institute and the Centre for Microtechnologies ensure the demand for specialists and managers and provide a constant supply of fresh, competitive ideas for Chemnitz companies.

The Technologie Centrum Chemnitz (TCC) offers 12,500 square metres of rentable commercial space at its three locations on Bernsdorfer Strasse, Annaberger Strasse and in the "Start up" building.

With the "Start up" building, a new location for technology-orientated start-up companies was opened in Chemnitz in June 2009. In the centre of the new Smart Systems Campus and thus in the immediate vicinity of Chemnitz University of Technology, Fraunhofer Institutes and growth-oriented technology companies in microsystems technology, start-up companies in the "Start up" building have excellent conditions for their own market entry.

Chemnitz and the surrounding Ore Mountains are the most start-up-friendly region in eastern Germany (2007 start-up ranking by the New Social Market Economy Initiative). Chemnitz regularly ranks among the top places in surveys on the business start-up and entrepreneur friendliness of the administration.
