Electromobility

Since the adoption of the Integrated Climate Protection Programme in December 2012, the City of Chemnitz has been focusing intensively on the topic of "electromobility". This takes up the Federal Government's objective of significantly increasing the proportion of vehicles with alternative drive systems (FAA), in particular electric vehicles, in the overall fleet and thus making a measurable contribution to reducing noise, air pollutants and greenhouse gases. After an "Electromobility" working group was set up in 2013, initially consisting of the city administration, eins energie in Sachsen GmbH & Co. KG (eins), Chemnitzer Verkehrs AG, the Chamber of Crafts and local companies, was founded in 2013, it was expanded in 2016 to become the "Electromobility" working group, which has since also included representatives of the city council, the housing industry, private companies and environmental organisations.

The aim is to evaluate the development of electromobility in the city of Chemnitz, expand the existing infrastructure, remove barriers to the purchase or use of electric vehicles and establish specific projects to promote electromobility. Following the approach of traffic avoidance, the focus is on a change in mobility rather than a pure change in traffic. In addition to the car segment, cycling, public transport and commercial transport are also considered important target groups.

Chemnitz City Council is further expanding the use of electromobility after an electric BMW i3 was added to the fleet as the first electric car in November 2016. Currently, 17 electric vehicles, five electric platform vans, five pedelecs and two electric cargo bikes are used in the city administration's fleet.

Electric mobility will be prioritised for upcoming new purchases. The aim is to gradually increase the number ofCO2-neutral vehicles in the Chemnitz city administration and to further develop the corresponding framework conditions.

The study "Development of sustainable mobility chains based on electric vehicles, taking into account the differentiated settlement structure, linking with public transport at suitable hubs, supply with renewable energy" was supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI).
