Summer holidays in Chemnitz
Pupils in Saxony are on summer holidays from 4 July to 14 August. To make sure they don’t get bored during the six weeks of the holidays, we’ve put together some ideas for things to do, either on their own or with the whole family. This list is by no means exhaustive, and changes may be made.

The 2026 holiday calendar is back!
The Chemnitz Holiday Calendar is back, and this time – alongside the category of the same name in the FamilienApp Chemnitz, it’s also available again as a print version to flick through. With a new format, a sleeker design and, in the spirit of Chemnitz’s young people, printed on recycled paper, it is packed with a wide variety of events, multi-day courses and camps for the summer holidays.

Just in time for the start of the summer holidays on 4 July, Saxony’s transport associations are once again offering the popular “FerienTicket”. School pupils, apprentices and volunteers under the age of 21 can use it to travel around the Free State at a reduced rate for six weeks during the summer holidays.
The ‘FerienTicket Sachsen’ is valid for 36.50 euros throughout the whole of the state as well as within the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV) area – meaning it also covers journeys as far as Halle and Altenburg. Those travelling only within the region can opt for the cheaper version for VMS and VVV: it costs 22 euros and covers buses, trams and local trains in Central Saxony and the Vogtland.
FerienticketsAnimal Park & Wildlife Enclosure
During the summer holidays, the zoo and wildlife enclosure are offering feeding sessions and the Open Zoo School. Meet at the relevant enclosure.
At the zoo, the Open Zoo School can be explored on 22, 28 and 29 July from 1 pm to 6 pm. Each day is dedicated to a specific theme. The exact times and animal species can be found on the zoo’s website or enquired about at the ticket office.
The popular feeding demonstrations will also be taking place again at the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Enclosure during the holidays at 11.00: on Sundays with the wildcats and on Saturdays with the bison.

Outdoor swimming pools & reservoir
Ice skating in Küchwald
This summer, the outdoor swimming pools are once again inviting visitors to enjoy games, fun and water-based activities.
The Wittgensdorf, Gablenz and Bernsdorfer Bad outdoor swimming pools, as well as the Rabenstein reservoir, are open daily from 10 am to 8 pm.
The Einsiedel outdoor swimming pool is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm.
Pool parties:
The Bernsdorf outdoor pool is hosting a party on 5 July from 11 am to 5 pm, featuring an aqua obstacle course, taster diving sessions, the ‘Ritterburg’ bouncy castle, a water polo arena and a slackline.
The Wittgensdorf outdoor pool will follow on 15 August from 11 am to 5 pm. Here, pool-goers can look forward to a cannonball contest, Neptune baptism, canoe race, water polo arena and bungee fun run.

The Chemnitz Museum of Natural History is offering a range of hands-on activities for children, young people and families during the summer holidays. In workshops such as ‘Nature Journaling’, participants can explore the colours and textures of insects through drawing, whilst other events give them the chance to get up close to the animals and even touch them.
Exciting holiday activities are also on offer at the excavation site, including another ‘Nature Journaling’ workshop and an ‘Escape Game’ for the whole family.
Participation in all events is free of charge. Advance registration is required.

The park railway invites you on Saturday 18 July, from 1 pm to 6 pm, and on Sunday, 19 July, from 10 am to 6 pm, to sit back and relax, listen to the puffing of the steam locomotive and enjoy the view of the idyllic Küchwald. The steam locomotive will only be in service on Sunday from 1 pm.
“Back-to-School Rides”
On Saturday 15 August, children starting school can ride the Park Railway for free from 1 pm to 6 pm, provided they have a school starter’s goody bag. The park railway mouse “Klaus” will be there to personally congratulate the new pupils. At 5.45 pm, the Sandmännchen will set off with all the guests on a journey through the Küchwald.

Further holiday offers
Botanical Garden
Beekeeping Day will take place on Sunday 5 July, from 10 am to 5 pm. The event is dedicated to honeybees and offers practical insights into life in the hive, interesting facts about bees, honey and nature conservation, and visitors can purchase beekeeping products from the beekeepers’ association. On Wednesday 29 July at 11 am, there will be an animal feeding session and a guided tour of the animal enclosures in the garden. Both events are free of charge.

The Solaris FZU offers children and young people a varied holiday programme featuring creative workshops, sport, digital activities and excursions. The programme includes, amongst other things, arts and crafts, climbing, experiments, cooking, upcycling and exciting excursions, e.g. to Augustusburg or the climbing forest.
