Summer holidays in Chemnitz

From 28 June to 8 August, schoolchildren in Saxony have their summer holidays. To make sure they don't get bored during the six weeks of holiday, we have put together some tips for things to do alone or with the whole family. These are not exhaustive and are subject to change.
We wish all children a wonderful and relaxing summer holiday!
Animal park and game reserve

The zoo and wildlife park offer feeding sessions and short guided tours during the summer holidays. The meeting point is at the respective enclosure.
In the zoo, short public tours take place daily at 11 a.m. The exact times and animal species can be found on the zoo's homepage or requested at the ticket office.
The Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park will also be offering the popular show feedings every day at 11 a.m. during the holidays: Mondays with the wolf, Tuesdays and Fridays with the mouflons, Wednesdays with the bison, Thursdays and Sundays with the wildcats and Saturdays with the badgers.

Outdoor pools and reservoir
Ice skating in Küchwald

This summer, the outdoor pools are once again inviting visitors to enjoy fun, games and water fun.
Einsiedel outdoor pool will be celebrating its pool festival on 13 July from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a slide contest, a diving stick wrestling competition, a water polo demonstration, a bouncy castle in the shape of a knight's castle and a chair run.
The Wittgensdorf outdoor pool follows on 10 August from 11 am to 5 pm. A Neptune baptism, an arse-bombing contest, a water polo demonstration, zorbing ball action and exciting slide races await bathers here.
The outdoor pools in Wittgensdorf, Gablenz, Einsiedel, Bernsdorfer Bad and the Rabenstein reservoir are open daily from 10 am to 8 pm.
Until 20 July, the 50-metre pool at the Stadtbad is open to guests on Mondays from 3 pm to 8 pm, Wednesdays from 6.30 am to 2 pm and Thursdays from 2 pm to 8 pm. From 21 July until 17 August, the 25-metre pool will be open.
Holiday calendar 2025

The holiday calendar is breaking new ground in its 20th year: This year, the holiday calendar offers will be published in the FamilienApp Chemnitz; there will be no printed calendar.
From now on, events, activities and camps will be published in a separate category in the FamilyApp calendar and can be filtered by period and postcode.

The Games Museum is offering extended opening hours during the summer holidays: Tuesdays to Fridays from 11 am to 6 pm. The museum is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
In the last week of the holidays, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, it will also be open at the weekend from 1pm to 6pm - with games and small gifts.
The holiday programme includes Mario Kart Cup tournaments, twall® challenges and the "Nights at the SpieleMuseum" events.

"Full steam ahead into the summer holidays"
The park railway invites you to sit back and relax on Saturday, 12 July, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, 13 July, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., listen to the puffing of the steam locomotive and enjoy the view of the idyllic Küchwald forest. Steam locomotive operation from 1 pm.
"Back-to-school trips"
On Saturday, 9 August, school leavers with a sugar cone have free travel on the park railway from 1 pm to 6 pm. The park railway mouse "Klaus" will be there to personally congratulate the school starters. At 5.45 pm, the Sandman will take all guests on a ride through the Küchwald.

FerienTicket makes you mobile: travelling cheaply through Saxony by bus and train
Just in time for the start of the holidays on 28 June, Saxony's transport associations are once again offering the popular "FerienTicket". Pupils, trainees and volunteers under the age of 21 can use it to travel around the state for six weeks during the summer holidays at low cost.
The "FerienTicket Sachsen" is valid for 36.50 euros throughout the state and in the area of the Central German Transport Association (MDV) - including Halle and Altenburg. If you are only travelling regionally, you can opt for the cheaper version for VMS and VVV: it costs 22 euros and covers buses, trams and local trains in Central Saxony and the Vogtland region - a price advantage of 14.50 euros.
Both tickets are valid from 28 June to 10 August 2025 and are available from ticket machines, service points and many bus drivers and train attendants. Further information is available online or by telephone on 0371 40008-88.

On 4 July 2025, the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz is offering a special summer holiday event for children. From 9 to 10.30 a.m., interested children and after-school groups can take part in the "Stone workshop for little artists".
The focus is on the volcanic rock tuff - fossilised ash formed during volcanic eruptions. Using hammers and chisels, the young participants create their own works of art from the rock. As a creative highlight, they make tea light holders from porphyry, which they can then take home with them.
The programme is aimed at children aged seven and over. Participation is free of charge, the group size is limited to a maximum of 20 children. Prior registration is required by contacting Anne Förster on 0371 / 488-4555 or by e-mail at foerster@naturkunde-chemnitz.de.

This activity invites children to fold butterflies and hedgehogs out of paper, paint flower children and flowers out of wood and create colourful wind chimes out of various materials.

At "Auf leisen Sohlen im Park", employees of the city library and volunteers from the "Förderer der Stadtbibliothek Chemnitz e. V." association read exciting and humorous stories for children aged 4 to 10.
Further holiday offers
solaris facilities
Solaris FZU offers a varied programme with creative workshops, sporting activities, digital offers and excursions. Children and young people can make animated films, design in the art workshop or create recycled art in the waste studio. Sports activities include adventure hikes, obstacle courses, archery and tournaments. VR journeys, experiments, theatre and henna painting are also on the agenda. Culinary workshops impart knowledge about lemonade, jam, ice cream and more. Excursions include trips to Augustusburg, the climbing forest and the games museum.
moreKraftwerk e. V.
During the summer holidays, Kraftwerk e.V.'s creative workshop will be offering a variety of craft and design activities for children and young people from 1 July to 8 August. On the dates from 1 to 4 July, 8 to 11 July, 29 July to 1 August and 5 to 8 August, participants can design creative projects such as light bottles, money boxes, silk scarves, cloth bags, glass lanterns and tea light holders. The workshop is open from Tuesday to Friday, from 9.30 am to 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm. The programme depends on the number of registered groups, so please call 0371 383903-0 to book in advance.
moreChemnitz Chamber of Crafts
From 1 July to 8 August 2025, the Chemnitz Chamber of Crafts invites young people in years 7 to 9 to the holiday workshop. At the Education and Technology Centre at Limbacher Straße 195, they can get to know various trades in practice on individual days - including confectionery, wood, automotive, metal, construction/mosaic, paint and bricklaying.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on each day, the participants make small workpieces and gain an insight into the skilled trades. They are accompanied by trained specialists.
Guided tour of the botanical garden
Beekeeping Day will take place on Sunday, 6 July from 10 am to 5 pm. The free event is dedicated to honey bees. Those interested can gain practical insights into life in the beehive, learn interesting facts about bees, honey and nature conservation and purchase beekeeping products from the beekeepers' association. On Wednesday, 9 July at 3 p.m., there will be an animal feeding and guided tour of animal husbandry in the garden. Led by David Kiraly, guests will discover the garden's animal diversity, get to know the animals and learn how they are kept. This event is also free of charge.
