The Chemnitz town hall

Chemnitz Town Hall consists of the Old Town Hall and the New Town Hall, which was built later, and is therefore referred to as a double town hall.
The Old Town Hall was built at the end of the 15th century and has undergone several remodelling projects over the centuries. At the foot of the town hall tower is a remarkable Renaissance portal with the half-figures of Judith and Lucretia.
The New Town Hall was built at the beginning of the 20th century according to plans by city architect Richard Möbius. It blends in harmoniously with the Old Town Hall. The carillon (glockenspiel) has been located in the New Town Hall Tower since 1978. The 5 metre high Roland and the city coat of arms adorn the front of the New Town Hall. The interior of the building was predominantly decorated in Art Nouveau style. The famous mural "Labour - Prosperity - Beauty" by Max Klinger (1918) can be seen in the town council chamber.
The High Tower dates back to the 12th century and once served as the fortified residence of the town bailiff. Since the 14th century, the High Tower has been part of the Old Town Hall. In 1986, the octagonal storey with a dome was built, returning the tower to its Baroque state of 1746. Today, you can enjoy the unique view from the High Tower during the popular guided tour of the town hall and tower.

Ratskeller needs to be renovated
The Ratskeller needs to be extensively refurbished. The last major refurbishment of the Ratskeller was in 1992, meaning that renovations to the building are urgently needed, particularly in the interests of fire safety.
At its meeting on 15 May 2019, the city council approved the construction decision for this and for the toilet facilities in the town hall.
