The City Council is the main body of the city and the political representation of the citizens of Chemnitz. It decides on the city's fundamental developments. One of its most important tasks is to pass resolutions on the budget. All its actions are based on the Saxon municipal code.

The City Council is made up of 60 elected volunteers from Chemnitz and the Lord Mayor as Chairman of the City Council. The administration prepares the decisions with negotiation documents on which the City Council decides.

The City Council generally meets once a month. In addition, the Chemnitz City Council has eight specialised committees to which the City Council has assigned certain areas of responsibility for permanent execution. These committees also discuss issues in advance on which the City Council is to decide.

The City Council Chamber is the larger of the two meeting rooms in Chemnitz City Hall, which was built between 1909 and 1911 under the direction of city architect Richard Möbius. It was extensively restored for the 100th anniversary of the New Town Hall and at the same time equipped with a modern voting system.
