City Council
The City Council is the main body of the city and the political representation of the citizens of Chemnitz. It decides on the city's fundamental developments. One of its most important tasks is to pass resolutions on the budget. All its actions are based on the Saxon municipal code.
The City Council is made up of 60 elected volunteers from Chemnitz and the Lord Mayor as Chairman of the City Council. The administration prepares the decisions with negotiation documents on which the City Council decides.
The City Council generally meets once a month. In addition, the Chemnitz City Council has eight specialised committees to which the City Council has assigned certain areas of responsibility for permanent execution. These committees also discuss issues in advance on which the City Council is to decide.

The council information system gives you the following options:

The system contains information starting from the constituent meeting of the City Council on 5 August 2009 and is updated on an ongoing basis.

City Council meetings are broadcast live from www.chemnitz.de and are available as recordings until the next meeting.
The city council chamber
The City Councillors’ Chamber is the larger of the two meeting rooms in Chemnitz Town Hall, which was built between 1909 and 1911 under the supervision of City Planning Officer Richard Möbius. It underwent extensive restoration to mark the 100th anniversary of the New Town Hall and was fitted with a modern voting system at the same time.
