Environmental Centre
Together "Think globally, act locally!"

The Environmental Centre on Kaßberg has been a place of activity for peace and environmental groups as well as development policy initiatives since 1990. The diversity under one roof as well as the accessibility for interested and committed people simplifies mutual promotion, constant exchange and co-operation. Today and in the future, we need jointly negotiated strategies and measures to meet global and local challenges. The Environmental Centre offers a "workshop" for sustainable development.
Within the framework of Agenda 21 and Agenda 2030, the Urban Environment Centre supports the implementation of the global Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs), in the achievement of which cities have a decisive role to play.
The goal of an inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable city requires measures in various fields of action as well as the involvement of all stakeholders in Chemnitz and the region. The Environmental Centre's mission is derived from this: Information, education, counselling, participation, networking and cooperation. The target groups include children, young people, adults and stakeholders from the fields of civil society, culture, education, science, business and administration. The individual programmes are listed below.

This is what the environmental centre offers:
The Environmental Library is a public open access library that has been collecting media on the broad topic of the environment and sustainable development since 1990. Today it has around 9000 media units. The collection is mainly made up of publications from publishing houses, authorities, environmental organisations, associations, research facilities and institutes. The integrated "Third World Archive" provides materials on countries and cultures in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The media deal with development policy issues. The environmental library also has an extensive range of literature as well as games for environmental education and education for sustainable development.

Environmental Centre - Educational offers
An educational network for sustainability in Chemnitz organises the annual educational markets for sustainability in November. These appeal to children, young people and teachers with themed exhibitions, project days, workshops, lectures, films and discussions. They pick up on topics relating to sustainable development and present them for discussion in a variety of ways. Ecological and social issues are linked against the background of justice in the world.

The educational markets for sustainability can be found at
ESD offers for young people and adults are organised as part of local events as well as European and nationwide action weeks.

The Environmental Centre Office supports the implementation of the sustainability goals in municipal administrative action, as mandated by a city council resolution. Offices, specialised departments and institutions of the city are informed and advised on the development and implementation of their strategies and projects, e.g. on sustainable urban development, participation and fair procurement. Municipal programmes, such as the energy policy work programme, are supplemented by the Environmental Centre's projects.
The city council resolutions on Agenda 2030 can be found at
The City of Chemnitz has also produced a sustainability report as part of the "Globally Sustainable Municipality in Saxony" project of the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW). This can be viewed at:

The Environmental Centre Office organises thematic AGENDA groups on necessary discussion processes relating to sustainable urban development between citizens, civil society, administration, educational institutions, research, business and municipal bodies. Everyone can participate in the sustainability process through projects and activities aimed at creating an even more liveable and ecological city as well as global responsibility. The monthly AGENDA groups are open to both citizens and local interest groups, such as associations, organisations and companies. Anyone can contribute ideas and suggestions for topics and become active together. The current topics are: Ecology, tree protection, energy, mobility, fair trade, changing values, basic income.

The AGENDA Advisory Board represents the interests of citizens vis-à-vis the City Council and the city administration and is the exchange body for the individual AGENDA groups involved. It also advises and supports the city council and the city administration in matters of municipal sustainability. It is made up of the elected spokespersons of the AGENDA groups and five members of the City Council. There is close cooperation with the staff of the Environmental Centre office. The AGENDA Advisory Board meets six times a year at the Environmental Centre. The dates of the meetings, some of which are open to the public, are publicised in the official gazette and in the City of Chemnitz's council information system. Future content and procedures are agreed at an annual AGENDA meeting.
