Our city

City portrait
Chemnitz has a unique history to tell - of pioneering inventions in automotive engineering, mechanical engineering or the textile industry as well as of courageous entrepreneurs such as Richard Hartmann, Carl Gottlieb Haubold or Louis Schönherr. As a modern industrial city, Chemnitz has continued to write this history and is now one of the fastest-growing cities in Germany.
moreHistory
Chemnitz was first mentioned in a document in 1143. During the period of industrialisation, the city developed into one of the most important industrial cities in Germany. Between 1953 and 1990, Chemnitz was known as Karl-Marx-Stadt. The Chemnitz City Archive is open during opening hours to anyone who is interested in the city's history or wants to research their own family history.

Our environment forms the basis of life for all living beings in this world. In areas with a high traffic and settlement density such as the city of Chemnitz, it is a special task to treat it with care.
