The European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany

Chemnitz is part of the European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany. It is one of eleven metropolitan regions in Germany recognised by the Conference of Ministers for Spatial Planning (MKRO). As centres for growth, knowledge and innovation, they are "engines of societal, economic, social and cultural development" and play a key role in regional development in Germany and Europe.

In order to fulfil this claim, eight administrative districts, seven cities, around 60 structurally significant companies as well as chambers, universities and research institutions from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia have joined forces to form the European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany. In order to achieve its goals, the EMMD's activities are focussed on selected fields of action in the areas of business, science and culture.

Vision

"In 2030, Central Germany will be one of the most attractive and innovative economic, scientific and cultural regions in Europe, combining dynamic growth with a high quality of life."

Goals

Embedded in international trends such as globalisation, demographic change and European integration, the European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany is working to further develop the strengths of the region and thus be successful in the international competition for companies and skilled workers.

The objectives of the European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany include strengthening the international competitiveness of Central German companies, promoting education, science and research and improving public services through modern and attractive offers in the areas of energy, mobility, housing and culture. To this end, the EMMD is active in clearly defined, future-orientated fields of action in concrete implementation projects for the region.
