City council decides on permanent operation of bus route 49 between Grüna and Mittelbach

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to end the trial operation of bus route 49 between the districts of Grüna and Mittelbach and to make the route permanent with the timetable change in December 2025. This will secure the existing local transport service in the long term. In addition, the western districts will be better connected to the public transport network.

Bus route 49 went into operation in December 2019, having already been approved in the local transport plan in 2016. Originally, a three-year trial operation was planned, which was extended until the end of 2025 due to the pandemic-related restrictions. Evaluations of the past few years show a positive development of the line: most recently, around 24,000 passengers per year used the service. The stops at the Grüna stop and the centre of Grüna (Simmel) are in particularly high demand.

The line provides the citizens of Mittelbach with a direct connection to shopping facilities, the primary school and the savings bank in Grüna as well as a quick transfer to Chemnitz city centre via local rail transport. At the same time, the residents of Grüna will benefit from better connections to their residential areas and leisure destinations such as the Grüna forester's lodge or the observation tower on the Totenstein.

To further improve the cost-effectiveness of the service, the regular service will be replaced by a scheduled taxi service (ALiTa) from 7 p.m. onwards. Passengers can thus continue to enjoy flexible mobility while operating costs are reduced.

There are currently no plans to extend the route or add additional stops.
