The city of Chemnitz has imposed a budget freeze on some areas of the city administration for the coming year. This is due to the tight budget situation and requirements imposed by the state administration in connection with the 2026 budget.
For this reason, treasurer Ralph Burghart announced that a five per cent budget freeze would be imposed on certain budget items from 1 January 2026.
The city aims to save around 23 million euros with these measures.
The State Directorate had obliged the City of Chemnitz to ensure that effective measures are introduced to reduce the planned deficit of 100 million euros before the credit authorisation is used in 2026.
The freeze includes savings on its own staff, office supplies, travel and training costs as well as grants to independent organisations.
Mayor Ralph Burghart: "Despite a tense financial situation and few hopeful signals from the federal and state governments, it is important to me to act moderately and not to increase the percentage of the freeze from 2025 to 2026 despite the significantly increasing deficit. The city of Chemnitz alone cannot cope with the deficit, but must do everything necessary to fulfil the requirements of the state government and thus remain capable of acting independently."
