First "toilet for all" in Saxony

Start of construction on Johannisplatz on 24 November

On Monday, 24 November, the first construction work for the new toilet location on Johannisplatz - the first "toilet for all" in Saxony - will begin with foundation work and development. Completion is scheduled for December 2025.

Chemnitz has public and disabled-accessible toilets. However, the existing toilet facilities are often unsuitable for people with severe and multiple disabilities.
In the run-up to the European Capital of Culture year, the social association VdK Sachsen e. V. and the city of Chemnitz developed the idea of creating a "toilet for all" in Chemnitz city centre.

People with severe disabilities, such as paraplegia, traumatic brain injury, congenital severe disabilities or multiple sclerosis, will find everything they need for their personal hygiene.
Taking space requirements into account, the toilet container has a barrier-free toilet, a stretcher and a hoist. Access is possible via a so-called Euro key, which is only issued to people who are dependent on disabled toilets and can provide proof of this (such as a severely disabled pass with certain characteristics).

The special toilet container is being procured by the Sozialverband VdK Sachsen e. V. and supported by the funding programme "Barrier-free building - favourite places for everyone".

The construction costs for, among other things, the construction of the foundation, the development and the barrier-free access route amount to around 60,000 euros and are being financed by the city of Chemnitz.

The work is being carried out by the company Steinbach & Richter GbR from Lichtenau. Construction supervision is being carried out by the City of Chemnitz's green spaces department.
The toilet container is being manufactured by Menzl GmbH.

The Pure Life Foundation is committed to the creation of "Toilets for All" in public places throughout Germany. Without a suitable toilet, people with complex disabilities cannot participate in public life.
