Premium cycle path records significantly more cyclists after bridge opening

Cycle traffic on the premium cycle path has increased noticeably since the new bridge over Kalkstraße was opened for use on 15 October 2025. This was revealed by a recent cycle traffic count on the premium cycle path.

Cyclists were counted at two counting points near the bridge. A significant increase was recorded compared to the results of the previous years 2023 and 2024. In particular, leisure traffic at weekends has increased significantly with more than 1,000 cyclists per day. There are clear recreational peaks in the afternoon hours.

At the end of October 2025, a peak value of 1027 cyclists was counted in one day. In comparison: a peak value of 777 cyclists was counted in August 2024 and a peak value of 760 cyclists in August 2023.

Cycle traffic has been counted three times so far, with each count lasting four days, from Thursday to Sunday. In both directions, an average of 618 cyclists per day travelled on the premium cycle path in 2023, an average of 619 cyclists per day in 2024 and an average of 712 cyclists per day in 2025.

This means that around 100 more cyclists per day will use the cycle path after the bridge is opened. Seasonal fluctuations must also be taken into account here: The most recent count took place in autumn. It is therefore possible that even more people use the cycle path in summer. The next count next year will provide further information.

The available figures already confirm that the bridge construction has successfully closed an important gap in the premium cycle path, which the city of Chemnitz was able to realise with the support of the Free State. The next construction phase has already begun. By the end of December 2026, a further 2.4 kilometres between Röhrsdorfer Straße in Grüna and Riedstraße should enable comfortable, safe cycling on the premium cycle path.
