On Tuesday, 25 November, from 6 p.m. to 10.30 p.m., the City of Chemnitz Equal Opportunities Officer, Franziska Herold, and Frauenhilfe Chemnitz e. V., supported by other local partners, invite you to the central event to mark the International Day against Violence against Women at the Metropol cinema, Zwickauer Straße 11. On the day, which is also known as "Orange Day", several campaigns and events will take place in Chemnitz to raise awareness of the issue and provide support for those affected.
The theme of the evening at the Metropol cinema is "Domestic Violence". In cooperation with Klinikum Chemnitz gGmbH and the Chemnitz police's victim protection officer, the organisers have put together a broad programme: Mercedes Nobis, the police's victim protection officer, will present the police crime statistics. Dr Johanna Rose from Chemnitz Hospital will report on the new confidential forensics service for victims of sexual violence. Mareike Luisa Groß, herself a former victim of domestic violence and author, will describe her experiences with partner violence and her way out of the spiral of violence in a video contribution; she will be connected live afterwards. Afterwards, visitors will be able to talk to the three speakers in a Q&A session. Finally, the film "Tomorrow is another day" will be shown. Various aid organisations and initiatives will introduce themselves in the foyer of the cinema.
Participation in the event is free of charge; sign language interpreters will be available for the presentations. Registration is recommended via the event link.
Further campaigns
The "Violence doesn't come into my bag!" campaign starts this week. Several Chemnitz bakeries - including Emil Reimann GmbH, Bäckerei & Konditorei Pietschker and NOMAD Bakery as the main supporters - will be distributing bread bags with offers of help from the city of Chemnitz and the international aid hand symbol from 18 November. This joint initiative by Frauenhilfe Chemnitz e. V. and the municipal equal opportunities officer will draw attention to low-threshold support options for those affected in everyday life.
Chemnitz will also shine in orange in public spaces on 25 November: The energy supplier Eins Energie in Sachsen GmbH & Co KG will light up only the orange section of the chimney in the evening as a highly visible sign against violence against women.
In the afternoon, at around 2.30 p.m., the Frauenhilfe Chemnitz e. V. association will install two plaques on the benches on the Chemnitz near Brückenstraße, which will draw attention to the association's two projects as support services for victims of domestic violence: the women's and children's shelter and the Intervention and Coordination Centre for Combating Domestic Violence and Stalking (IKOS). The dusky pink benches were set up by the association last year in memory of Valeriya N. and Andrea N.. The women were killed by their husbands during their stay at the Chemnitz women's refuge. In addition, another plaque commemorates Masouma S., who was allegedly killed by her husband in Chemnitz in September 2025.
