moreWhat's new about CITY CYCLING 2025?
- Twin cities cycle together! Sport brings people together and so this year we are cycling together with our twin city Düsseldorf. In addition to the joint cycling period, we are also sharing our cycling stories and visiting each other. You can find out more in the CITY CYCLING blog.
- Culture connects! The 2nd rally Chemnitz will take place on 6 September 2025 in the spirit of the Capital of Culture. Over 10 tours will lead from the Capital of Culture region to Chemnitz in the shape of a star. Here, the tours will meet at the Karl Marx Monument and cycle together to SPORTS UNITED. Details will be published here.
- Secondary schools, special schools and grammar schools show yourselves! This year, the schools will be honoured separately. Be part of it! The winners in each category will receive prize money totalling €150.00.
- Companies in demand! The journey to work accounts for a large proportion of everyday journeys. And so this year, CITY CYCLING is explicitly calling on companies to take part. Participation in the campaign can be incorporated into company health management and strengthens the sense of community among employees. How about a joint tour as a team event, for example?

The campaign created by Climate Alliance sensitises citizens to the use of bicycles in everyday life and brings the topics of bicycle use and bicycle traffic planning more strongly into the municipal parliaments. The importance of cycling for climate protection and quality of life as well as people's own mobility behaviour is to be brought to the fore. Since the start of the campaign in 2008, the number of participating municipalities has risen from 23 at the beginning to over 2500 today.
Walking and cycling are at the heart of sustainable mobility and characterise the urbanity and vitality of the city. Almost 60% of all journeys made in Saxony's cities are less than five kilometres long, and the majority of these can be reached quickly and easily by bicycle. In addition, 80 % of German households own a bicycle. A high degree of flexibility in mobility is achieved in particular through the simple link with local public transport. This is precisely where the CITY CYCLING campaign comes in - in everyday mobility behaviour. Participants in the campaign change their perspective and experience their everyday life by bike over the three-week campaign period.
Chemnitz is to become a bicycle-friendly city - that is the declared goal of local politics.
Everyone who lives, works, studies or belongs to a club in Chemnitz.

The aim of CITY CYCLING is for the people of Chemnitz to cycle together for a more bicycle-friendly and liveable city - climate protection and cycling promotion are teamwork! Two people can join together to form a team. Alternatively, you can join the open team.
In principle, everything that includes a start and end point counts as a journey. The start point can also be the finish point. Cycling competitions and training on stationary bicycles are excluded.
Via the CITY CYCLING app and the online kilometre log.
Quite simply by passing on the CITY CYCLING data to the RiDE portal. Simply authorise it in the CITY CYCLING app and help improve cycling together!
There is also the option of reporting acute damage, etc. via the City of Chemnitz's defect reporter or contacting the Traffic and Civil Engineering Office by email.
In addition to the positive effects on your own health and the commitment to climate protection, there are also attractive prize categories:
- The most active cyclists (people with the most kilometres cycled)
- The team with the most active cyclists (team with the most kilometres cycled per person)
- The team with the most total kilometres cycled

- The most bicycle-active secondary school
- The most cycling-active grammar school

From this year onwards, the category of the most bicycle-active school will be split up to ensure fairer competition between the schools. You can find more information on the scoring of the categories in the conditions of participation.
That was CITY CYCLING 2024
CITY CYCLING took place in Chemnitz from 2 to 22 September 2024. This year, more Chemnitz residents took part in the Climate Alliance's international cycling campaign than ever before. 3,152 active cyclists pedalled hard and cycled 573,416 kilometres in 220 teams. This corresponds to aCO2 avoidance of approx. 95 tonnes compared to using a car.
At the second #chemnitzdrehtamtradtour (CITY CYCLING tour), which took place at the beginning of the campaign this year, 200 cyclists came together on 2 September 2024 and set a visible sign for individual health promotion, cycling promotion and climate protection in Chemnitz. For the first time, a rally ride through Chemnitz was held at the end of CITY CYCLING and European Mobility Week on 22 September 2024, in which almost 100 Chemnitz residents took part.
"Even if not all records from 2023 were broken this year, all participants can be proud of the result. The short week with persistently bad weather slowed us down, but did not stop us from using the bicycle as a sustainable means of mobility. In view of the city's climate protection goals, it is important that the environmental network, consisting of public transport, walking and cycling, is further strengthened," said the head of the City of Chemnitz's environmental department, Ms Carina Kühnel.
