Flu season earlier than usual this year

Special vaccination campaign on 18 December, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Office for Health and Prevention

In addition to corona infections, there is currently - and therefore earlier than usual - an increase in influenza A infections. Between the 40th and 50th calendar week, 160 cases of influenza were recorded in Chemnitz. In the same period in 2024, there were 19 cases and 89 cases in the same period in 2023.

The Office for Health and Prevention advises anyone who has not yet received a flu vaccination this year to get one quickly at their GP or at the joint vaccination centre of the City of Chemnitz and Chemnitz Hospital (Klinikum Chemnitz, Küchwald, Haus 11, Bürgerstraße 2) on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 6 pm.

In Saxony, the influenza vaccination is generally recommended for all children (from the age of 6 months), adolescents and adults. There is a special indication for children, adolescents and adults with a health risk due to a chronic underlying condition, for residents of retirement or nursing homes, pregnant women for their own protection and for the protection of the newborn, medical staff and nursing staff, family members and other persons with direct contact to patients at risk, persons with a particular risk of infection (e.g. with extensive public traffic) and persons with frequent, regular and direct contact to e.g. pigs, poultry, wild birds and seals.

Additional vaccination date
Due to the rising influenza numbers, the Office for Health and Prevention is offering an additional flu vaccination consultation on Thursday, 18 December, from 2 to 5 pm at the Office for Health and Prevention, Am Rathaus 8, on the 2nd floor. Vaccinations will be given on this day without an appointment.

Recommendations for the cold season
Anyone who has symptoms of an acute respiratory infection should stay at home for three to five days until the symptoms have significantly improved. During this time, it is recommended to avoid direct contact with people, especially those who have an increased risk of severe disease progression. If close contact with a person from a risk group - such as babies or older or previously ill people - cannot be avoided, a mask should be worn to protect others.

In closed rooms, the risk of infection can be reduced by regular ventilation or wearing a face mask. From a medical point of view, it is also advisable to avoid shaking hands in autumn and winter, as numerous pathogens can be transmitted in this way.

Information on the joint vaccination centre
The joint vaccination centre, which was set up as a low-threshold vaccination centre during the coronavirus pandemic, will not reopen in 2026.
Recently, vaccination numbers have fallen significantly and this year were around half of what they were in 2023. Most patients also have a family doctor or paediatrician who is the first point of contact for vaccinations. However, the structure would be available again in a disaster situation.

Chemnitz Hospital will continue to offer vaccination campaigns, as will the Office of Health and Prevention:

The Office of Health and Prevention will also resume regular immunisation consultations from next year. A separate press release will be issued on this.
The paediatric and adolescent medical service already offers vaccination consultations in addition to advice on measles immunity.

From 2026, vaccinations without an appointment will be possible in the outpatient clinic of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at Chemnitz Hospital on Mondays from 8 am to 11 am and Wednesdays from 2 pm to 5.30 pm.
