In August, work begins on the new construction of the foot and cycle path bridge over the Chemnitz between Rößlerstraße and the city park. The existing bridge had to be closed in spring 2025 following a regular inspection for structural reasons.
The new bridge will consist of a single-span steel structure with a total length of 25.90 metres and a width of 4.14 metres. The carriageway width will be increased from 2 metres to 3.50 metres to ensure safe pedestrian and cycle traffic.
Construction work will begin with the demolition of the existing structure, after which the foundations will be constructed. The new bridge will then be lifted into place and the carriageway surface completed. Finally, the embankments will be restored and landscaped, particularly on the side of the city park. The work will be carried out from the Rößlerstraße side, so no full road closures are planned in the city park.
No temporary, publicly usable river crossing will be built during the construction period, as this would increase the impact on the riverbed and sensitive riverbank areas and significantly extend the construction period. Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to use the southern diversions via Paul-Gruner-Straße and Heinrich-Lorenz-Straße or the northern diversions via Straßburger Straße and Beckerstraße between Rößlerstraße and the Stadtpark.
The newly built bridge is expected to be opened to traffic in the second half of 2026. The costs for the new construction amount to around 980,000 euros. The work is being carried out by Krause & Co Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau, Neukirchen/Erzgebirge.
