Pilot project to open up school sports grounds begins

At the start of the new school year, a pilot project will be launched at three schools in Chemnitz to open sports facilities at schools that are used for school activities during the day and can now be used for recreational sports afterwards. The project implements a decision by the city council to initially test the utilisation at selected schools and, in particular, which issues need to be considered when opening up further areas.

From 11 August until the end of the year, the ball sports area at the Marianne Brandt secondary school and the basketball court at the secondary school on Hartmannplatz will initially be open to everyone without registration after the end of the school day, including at weekends. The obligatory usage times and rules will be displayed on the facilities until they open. The area on the southern Sonnenberg as part of the primary school on Jakobstraße is already partially accessible.

In addition to the school sports areas, numerous play and sports areas are already available throughout the city, which, in addition to the club sports facilities, enable everyone to engage in low-threshold leisure activities. These can be accessed at any time via the themed city map.

Mayor Ralph Burghart: "I am delighted that we are now launching this fantastic project and that schools are thus becoming a little more part of the neighbourhoods, in addition to their educational purpose. I hope that everyone will also bear in mind that it must always be possible for school to resume the following day during the week. At the end of the year, as agreed with the city councillors, we will evaluate the project and see what further steps are conceivable."
