Start of construction for adventure farm at Chemnitz Zoo
Path along the Unritzbach is closed
Construction work for the new adventure farm begins today at Chemnitz Zoo. The path along the Unritzbach stream, which is part of the zoo grounds and is being dismantled, is no longer accessible to the public.
The adventure farm will offer a special opportunity to experience endangered regional domestic animal breeds up close. In addition to the existing Erzgebirge goats, visitors will also be able to get to know Vogtland red cattle (beef cattle), saddleback pigs and a small, robust breed of sheep in an authentic environment and walk directly through some of the enclosures. Through animal contact and insights into the stables, the aim is to provide information about farming in the past, the development of domestic animals and the handling of animals.
The existing farm will be remodelled and extended to include adjacent fallow land. This will create more space and improve the design of the entire site.
The adventure farm is an important part of the masterplan for the further development of Chemnitz Zoo. The construction work is divided into two sub-projects: In the first construction phase, the site is being prepared for the new animal enclosures by dismantling the old facilities. New paths for visitors and shelters for the animals will be created. Completion of part A is planned for the second quarter of 2025. The stables and the courtyard in the upper part of the facility will then be built in section B.
The costs for part A of the new adventure farm amount to 250,000 euros. This part of the project is being implemented by the City of Chemnitz and financed entirely with funds from the assets of the political parties and mass organisations of the former GDR (PMO funds). Part B is planned to be realised by the Friends of Chemnitz Zoo Association. In addition, the city of Chemnitz is investing 100,000 euros of its own funds for the construction of new turnstiles.
Chemnitz Zoo specialised years ago in the preservation of old regional domestic animal breeds that are threatened with extinction because they no longer play a role in modern agriculture.
