With the start of the autumn season, acorns and chestnuts are increasingly being collected again - often with the well-intentioned intention of supporting animals in the zoo. However, Chemnitz Zoo would like to point out that these fruits are not accepted in the zoo itself. The Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park, on the other hand, is very happy to accept acorns and chestnuts as donations. These natural feedstuffs are an important source of food for the wild animals living there, especially in the approaching winter.
To ensure the best possible supply for the animals, the wildlife park asks that the acorns and chestnuts are sorted and free from leaves, grass or other impurities. Only in this way can the winter supplies be stored hygienically and put to optimum use.
A trailer is available at the Rabenstein Castle car park, where the collected fruit can be easily deposited. The donations make a significant contribution to keeping the animals in the wildlife enclosure healthy throughout the cold season.
The reason why the zoo does not accept these fruits is that many of the animals living there - especially exotic or sensitive species - cannot tolerate acorns and chestnuts. Feeding the animals with unsuitable or incorrectly stored food can lead to serious damage to their health or even death. For this reason, a strict feeding ban applies throughout the zoo - even for seemingly harmless foods such as bread, fruit or vegetables. Visitors are asked to refrain from feeding the animals in order to protect them.
