On Thursday, 18 September at 2.30 pm, Mayor Sven Schulze will receive the descendants of Jewish families from Chemnitz at Restaurant Di Sopra, Düsseldorfer Platz 1 (entrance via Café Michaelis). They will sign the city's Golden Book on the occasion of their visit to Chemnitz. Members of the Benda and Kugelmas families will be among those taking part, and stumbling stones will be laid for their families on Saturday, 20 September. (see press release 630)
Representatives of the media are invited to attend.
The descendants of the six Jewish families come from Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Israel and are visiting Chemnitz for a meeting organised by the Buntmacher:innen e. V. association in cooperation with the City of Chemnitz.
In addition to non-public appointments and the Mayor's reception, the programme of the meeting also includes events to which interested members of the public are invited free of charge.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 17 September, from 6.30 pm, a panel discussion with Jessica Durlacher and Babette Lichtenstein will take place in the Hartmannfabrik, Fabrikstraße 11. Their families were friends in Chemnitz at the beginning of the 20th century, and now the two women are meeting for the first time.
On Friday, 19 September, from 3.30 pm at Café Julius in smac, Stefan-Heym-Platz 1, interested parties will gain an insight into the diverse stories of the participants in the meeting. Selected episodes from the family history will be presented and mirrored by Jeffrey Goldberg on the piano in improvised miniatures.
