Niners Chemnitz win FIBA European Cup

Thousands of Chemnitz residents celebrated the Niners Chemnitz on the market square on Sunday, 28 April. After arriving on the team bus at Neumarkt, they were welcomed by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and Minister President Michael Kretschmer in the town hall. There, the players, coaches, club management and support team signed the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz.

Meanwhile, thousands of fans celebrated the team on the market square, which then presented itself with the European Cup on the town hall balcony and was cheered frenetically. Finally, the players came to the market to take photos with the fans and fulfil autograph requests.

The Niners Chemnitz basketball team won the final of the FIBA European Cup against the team from Bahcesehir College Istanbul on 24 April despite losing 95:105 after winning the first leg 85:74.

Lord Mayor Sven Schulze congratulates on this historic victory: "Hurray! The Niners have made it and are the 2024 FIBA Europe Cup winners. I congratulate them on this historic success - 25 years after the club was founded. The second leg was another tough game in the madhouse of Istanbul. But the players held their nerve. Congratulations also to the coaching team led by Rodrigo Pastore and the team led by managing director Steffen Herhold and the staff behind the scenes. I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the Niners fans who kept their fingers crossed for the team on site, in the exhibition centre or at home in front of their screens or cheered them on from afar - at the expense of their vocal chords, I suppose. And now it's time to celebrate this triumph, and the city will do so in style!"
