This DIN distinguishes between barrier-free flats and barrier-free flats that can be used without restriction with a wheelchair. The DIN specifies measures for the implementation of the 2-senses principle and for the auditory, visual and tactile transmission of information, particularly for flats for people with sensory impairments.

Barrier-free means a bundle of measures to reduce barriers in existing buildings with the aim of increasing the usability of flats (source: Heidelberg University of Applied Sciences). Barrier reduction is applied wherever it is not possible or not necessary in individual cases to create barrier-free accessibility in existing flats in accordance with DIN 18040 - 2 due to structural conditions.
