60 years of town twinning with Ljubljana
The aim of the visit is to honour the deep-rooted relationships and focus on the diversity of the joint projects. This is why project partners from Chemnitz from the fields of schools, sport and culture, who have been working on joint projects with their Slovenian partners for many years, will also be travelling here.
Mayor Sven Schulze will visit the Vižmarje-Brod school in Ljubljana and meet pupils and a teacher who were guests in Chemnitz last year during an Erasmus+ student exchange with the Chemnitz sports school. In September, the Chemnitz students will make a return visit to Ljubljana.
Sven Schulze will also visit the Creative Hub Centre Rog, which is similar to the Chemnitz Maker Hubs Stadtwirtschaft and Garage Camps that were created last year as intervention spaces for the Capital of Culture. A visit to the exhibition of a Slovenian-German artist is also planned.
On Friday, 8 May, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will attend the official reception of the City of Ljubljana on the occasion of the national Independence Day. This will be followed by an official reception hosted by the City of Ljubljana at Ljubljana Castle, where Sven Schulze will sign the city's book of honour.
On Saturday, 9 May, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will join the Lord Mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Janković, to give the starting signal for a 20-kilometre run, thereby also sending out a signal for peace and cohesion. This circular route, which is up to 34 kilometres long, runs along the former barbed wire fence that surrounded Ljubljana during the Second World War and was torn down in 1945. Three runners from Chemnitz will also take part in the 20-kilometre run.
The delegation trip will conclude on Europe Day on 9 May at the German Embassy. The German Ambassador to Slovenia, Sylvia Groneick, will host a reception to mark the visit of the Mayor of Chemnitz to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the town twinning between Chemnitz and Ljubljana. Representatives of the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica are also expected to attend. Nova Gorica was the second European Capital of Culture in 2025 and Chemnitz has also been linked to this Slovenian city by a cooperation agreement since December 2025. An exchange within the framework of Makers United and the fire brigades of both cities are already being planned.</p
