Short description:
The "Verein Eisenbahnfreunde Richard Hartmann Chemnitz e. V." was founded on 13 October 2001 as a support association of the Saxon Railway Museum Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf. It has been operating as an independent association since 2007. The purpose of the association was expanded and the current name was chosen. Together with the Saxon Railway Museum, the Technical Museum Rope Drainage System is an important location for the 4th Saxon State Exhibition "Boom. 500 Years of Industrial Culture in Saxony", which will take place from 25 April to 1 November 2020 as SCHAUPLATZ Eisenbahn.
At the former Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf marshalling yard, the association presents Europe's only preserved facility for breaking up/decomposing goods trains without a locomotive. The striking horse-drawn signal box (command signal box 3) has been extensively renovated and houses the control system for the cable unwinding system, the functional model in gauge 1, an exhibition on the Chemnitz railway junction, the archive and the model collection of Hartmanns locomotives as well as a collection of operating books of steam, diesel and electric locomotives from the GDR up to 1991.
On the reconstructed track system between command signal box 3 and the engine house, visitor groups are given a guided tour of the historic technology of 1930, which can be booked in advance. The area also includes the refurbished tensioning gear, the engine house with the fully preserved drive machines, the Leonard set for direct current generation and a signalling boom complex. The restored cable wagon attendant's station, a 300m long signalling garden equipped with 48 signals and the restored 100-year-old goods shed can also be visited as part of the guided tours.
An open SKL "Schöneweide" will transport visitors along the 600 metre long track system between command signal box 3 and the engine house.
Special programmes and project days are offered for groups of visitors interested in technology and school classes.
