The Goethe Society, founded in Chemnitz on 22 March 1926, is an association with legal capacity and has been registered at Chemnitz District Court (register court) under the number VR 1124 since 12 November 1993.
The association bears the name Goethe-Gesellschaft Chemnitz e.V. and is an autonomous, independent local organisation of the Goethe-Gesellschaft in Weimar.
The society promotes Goethe's life and work (as well as those of his contemporaries), his cosmopolitan thinking and his significance for the present, supports the promotion of science and art and serves cultural education. The purpose of the society is realised through cooperation with other local branches of the Goethe Society in Weimar, with other societies, associations and institutions, a wide range of public relations work, annual programmes with public events and publications as well as annual educational trips "In Goethe's Footsteps...".
