School enrolment
Primary school enrolment for the 2027/2028 school year
Children born between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021 will be required to attend school from the start of the 2027/2028 school year.
In-person enrolment at the school
Enrolment is possible on Thursday 20 August 2026 and Tuesday 25 August 2026, from 2 pm to 6 pm on each day, at the chosen local primary school in the relevant school district.
If the child is enrolled at an independent primary school, the local authority primary school in the relevant school district must be notified in writing by 15 September 2026. To enrol, at least one parent or guardian with parental responsibility must be present and must provide the following documents:
- a fully completed enrolment form (available at www.chemnitz.de and at local primary schools)
- identity card of the parent or guardian registering the child
- birth certificate of the child starting school
- in the case of sole custody, proof of this is required

NEW: Online registration via Amt24
In addition to the procedure described above, the Saxon State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs has introduced a digital registration option across the whole of Saxony. Parents can register their child online via the following link during the period from Saturday, 1 August to Tuesday, 15 September 2026:
> schule.sachsen.de/gs-anmeldung
Digital registration is currently possible subject to certain conditions. These include, in particular:
- Parents and the child must have a residential address in Saxony,
- the child’s registered address must match the registered address of at least one parent,
- enrolment at a special school, comprehensive school or upper secondary school+ is not planned,
- enrolment at a state primary school outside the child’s own school catchment area is not required,
- and no deferral of the child’s start of school has been arranged.
Allocation to the relevant primary school is based on the residential address and the designated school catchment areas.
The new procedure for digital primary school enrolment relates exclusively to the enrolment process itself, which parents will in future be able to complete online. Irrespective of this, for the subsequent admission process in accordance with Section 4 of the Primary Schools Regulations, personal contact with the school will generally remain necessary and advisable.
Enquiries regarding digital primary school enrolment can be sent to the following email address from 22 June 2026: digitale-schulanmeldung(at)lasub.smk.sachsen.de
School entry assessment – online booking available from 15 June 2026
The school entry examination assesses the child’s developmental stage. This allows any health issues relevant to school attendance to be identified and support options to be highlighted. The examination is compulsory. An appointment for a repeat school entry examination is also required for children who were deferred the previous year.
From 15 June 2026, appointments can be booked via the City of Chemnitz’s participation portal:
Examination dates will be available from August. If you have any questions or encounter any problems, please call the government helpline on 115.
The examination takes place at the Office for Health and Prevention and lasts approximately 60 minutes in total. Please note that, due to renovation work at the Office for Health and Prevention, the Child and Adolescent Medical Service is currently located at Bahnhofstraße 5, 09111 Chemnitz .
