Against the backdrop of an increasingly ageing population, the "MoKo-Fit" project is dedicated to the health of people aged 65 and over in Chemnitz. It offers a low-threshold exercise programme tailored to the needs of senior citizens that strengthens motor and mental skills.

Since 2021, regular exercise groups have been taking place in the Helbersdorf, Gablenz and Siegmar districts, with up to 15 participants exercising twice a week in parks and green spaces. The programme will be expanded to other districts in 2024 and 2025.

Typical contents are

  • Strengthening exercises for legs, arms and torso
  • Balance and coordination exercises (e.g. with balls or elastic bands)
  • Endurance-enhancing forms of exercise at a moderate pace
  • Flexibility and stretching exercises
  • Memory and attention tasks in combination with movement
  • Small reaction and concentration games

Existing elements in the park such as benches or steps are actively incorporated into the training. Each exercise can be customised - no prior knowledge is required.

Our trained mentors are happy to welcome new participants. Please get in touch and find out about meeting points and training times without obligation.

During the group-based exercise programme, existing materials from the park and green areas (e.g. benches, trees, stairs) and small equipment (e.g. balls and elastic exercise bands) are used. The following skills should be promoted:

  • Motor skills (e.g. strength, endurance, coordination, mobility)
  • Everyday mental functions (e.g. memory, attention, mental flexibility)

After the groups have been led by licensed exercise instructors for approx. 4 months, they continue to run independently with the help of trained mentors.
