Bernsdorf swimming complex - review of the construction work
The Bernsdorf indoor pool was officially opened on 20 September 2024. After just over four years of construction, the modern indoor pool now complements the pool landscape of the city of Chemnitz.
The approx. 740 square metres of water surface can now be used in a wide variety of challenging ways during leisure time, school lessons, training or fitness programmes.
On the ground floor, the building offers guests a bathing experience for young and old over an area of around 3,000 square metres. An open foyer area, plenty of changing rooms for individuals, groups and families and a friendly, modern shower area await users both before and after the actual swimming and bathing experience.
In addition to a 25-metre swimming pool with six lanes, which has been designed for swimming and water polo competitions, there is also the option of using the diving pool with a 3-metre diving platform and 1-metre diving board as well as a teaching pool.
For younger guests, there is an approximately 60 square metre children's pool for splashing and playing. The adjoining catering area invites you to enjoy snacks and drinks.
The latest technical systems for ventilation, pool water treatment, heating and, for example, display technology ensure a modern and sustainable bathing experience from an energy-efficient point of view. Heat recovery from the ventilation system, an air-to-water heat pump and an extensive photovoltaic system for self-consumption, among other things, ensure that the swimming pool is both ecologically and economically orientated.
The building has been designed to be barrier-free. This means that all usable indoor areas as well as the outdoor facilities from the car park to the edge of the pool are designed accordingly for bathers.
Access to the building is ensured via the newly constructed outdoor facilities, which cater for all modes of transport. A sufficient number of parking spaces for cars and bicycles are available, as is a short distance to public transport, the terminus of which is located in the immediate vicinity in the Bernsdorf district.
The costs for the new indoor pool totalled 25.5 million euros.
In June 2016, the city council decided to build a new indoor swimming pool suitable for competitions with a 25-metre lane on the site of the former Bernsdorf outdoor pool.
The construction progress in pictures
May 2024
The construction work on the new indoor swimming pool is nearing completion and use is scheduled to begin at the start of the school year in August 2024. The pools, with the exception of the paddling pool, have already been filled and the necessary control of the pool water flow with the colouring test has been successfully completed. At the same time, the ventilation systems were put into operation. The pools are now gradually being heated up.
Remaining work is currently being carried out on the swimming pool extension and the building services systems, as well as the furniture in the foyer and changing area.
In the outdoor facilities, the service yard has already been completed. The area at the main entrance is also almost complete. The area for the bicycle and car parking spaces is also being constructed.
The swimming complex is due to be officially opened in September 2024.
March 2024
The interior work in the swimming pool hall is entering its final phase, including the installation of the wooden suspended ceilings, completion of the ventilation system and preparations for the commissioning of the water technology. Work on the outdoor facilities is in full swing.
In the outdoor pool area, work on the construction site equipment and demolition work began at the end of February.

July 2023
The final exterior of the building is well advanced, i.e. the clinker brick façade and glazing work are in the final phase. Once the roof has been waterproofed, preparatory work will be carried out on the roof in order to subsequently install the photovoltaic system and carry out green roof and graveling work. Work on the outdoor facilities will begin shortly. Around 10 trades are currently working simultaneously on the interior fit-out, including drywall construction, tiling, underfloor heating, painting and interior plastering work as well as the main building services - ventilation, heating and sanitary work.
February 2023
The roofing work will continue depending on the weather. The stainless steel pool is currently being installed in the 25 metre indoor swimming pool. The suspended ceilings are also being installed in the two indoor swimming pools. The interior work in the area of electrical engineering and the building services as well as the pool water technology is being realised as planned and the large components such as ventilation systems and pump technology are being installed.
