New rest area at the source of the Chemnitz

Start of construction in Altchemnitz at the confluence of the Würschnitz and Zwönitz rivers

A new rest area for cyclists and hikers is being built at the confluence of the Würschnitz and Zwönitz rivers, the source of the Chemnitz river. Construction work in Altchemnitz began this week.

The centrepiece of the new rest area is a seating area, which is complemented by natural greenery. The bicycle parking facility sets a visual accent: the striking bicycle stands are designed in the shape of the letters C-H-E-M-N-I-T-Z. The square thus offers the perfect opportunity for a short break on the popular cycle route along the Chemnitz.

The installation of a litter bin has been deliberately omitted. The City of Chemnitz Parks Department is appealing to everyone's environmental awareness: in order to preserve the natural character of the site in the long term, users are asked to take any packaging and waste they bring back with them and dispose of it at home.

The planning was carried out by employees of the Parks Department. The construction work is being carried out by the company Gert Findeklee GmbH & Co. from Chemnitz. The construction costs amount to around 34,000 euros. Completion is planned for the end of June.

The City of Chemnitz's green space department took over the originally developed area at the beginning of 2026. Based on the Fischwegbrücke intervention site in Chemnitz-Glösa, the idea was to build a smaller rest area at the confluence of the Würschnitz and Zwönitz rivers into the Chemnitz river - limited to a seating area and the distinctive bicycle stands.
