Cycling against the flow? Cyclists are only allowed to do this in one-way streets if it is expressly indicated by additional signs such as VZ 1000 - 32 (cycle traffic from left to right). To increase comfort, this is exactly what has been implemented at a 60 metre long narrow section of Hans-Ziegler-Straße. By clearing the road in the opposite direction, cyclists can now cycle in both directions at this important point on the route.

The reasons:

Cycling is very sensitive to detours. So if there is a longer diversions ahead, many people are more likely to give up cycling and choose an alternative, usually less environmentally friendly means of transport. However, cyclists should be seen as road users and taken seriously. By being able to cycle along Hans-Ziegler-Straße in both directions legally and without having to use the cycle path, cyclists will be able to avoid time-consuming detours in future and reach their destination more quickly. The associated time savings will increase comfort for cyclists and can have a lasting effect on their choice of transport.

The process:

The installation of signs, i.e. in technical terms the arrangement of traffic signs, is decided by the traffic authority. The local priority regulations and danger spots are discussed and checked at regular intervals during on-site meetings. Finally, the municipal building yard installs the signs. The other departments of the civil engineering office can suggest changes and take part in the on-site meetings. In this case, NUMIC proposed the approval as part of the traffic planning process. This is not an isolated case: in future, even more one-way streets will be made safe for cyclists travelling in the opposite direction.

Costs:

Two traffic signs cost between 80 and 150 euros without a mast

Realisation period:

2 to 4 weeks
