An unfinished story
The art collection of Lola and David Leder no longer exists. The exhibition in the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz goes in search of traces and shows historical donations that Lola and David Leder once gave to the Chemnitz Municipal Art Collection. The exhibition features works by artists such as Lovis Corinth, Karl Hofer, Max Liebermann, Oskar Kokoschka, Gustav Schaffer, Otto Theodor Wolfgang Stein, Rahel Szalit-Marcus and others.
<p
Lola and David Leder began collecting art at the end of the 1910s. Their shared passion for art was reflected in a personal collection that was constantly expanded and changed through purchases and sales. They maintained close contacts with the art and cultural scene. Among others, they were friends with the painter and draughtsman Otto Theodor Wolfgang Stein, who advised them on building up their art collection, as well as with the Chemnitz collector couple Senta and Erich Goeritz.
<p
A portrait of David Leder by Gustav Schaffer, painted in Chemnitz in 1920, is at the centre of the exhibition. The history of the work, the artist's oeuvre and the subsequent inventory of the painting in the Chemnitz Art Collections during the GDR era are examined. In collaboration with the Leder family's descendants, the exhibition also explores the provenance of the work and poses the question: Who does the painting belong to?
