At its meeting today, the City Council approved the theatre concept developed by Städtisches Theater Chemnitz gGmbH (STC). This envisages the retention of all of the theatre's divisions and venues while maintaining the size of the STC's workforce.
Due to the economic challenge for the STC as well as for the City of Chemnitz as a subsidiser, the City Council has thus paved the way for the establishment of new in-house collective agreements for the Chemnitz Municipal Theatres from 2027.
The concept envisages concluding new in-house collective agreements with a term of four years. These are to apply to all collective bargaining areas - including the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra, the artistic ensembles and the areas of technology, workshops and service. Among other things, it is planned to suspend the annual special payments and to reorganise pay increases. A pay rise of two per cent is planned for 2027. In the following years, no further pay rises are planned until the end of the term.
The new in-house collective agreements are intended to create the financial conditions for the Chemnitz theatres to continue to operate with an annual municipal subsidy of €36 million. The aim is to secure theatre operations in the long term and at the same time remain within the financial means of the municipal budget.
With this resolution, the General Director of Chemnitz Theatre is instructed to enter into talks with the trade unions. The outcome of the negotiations is to be presented to the City Council in the fourth quarter of 2026 for a final decision.
The background to this is the necessary budget consolidation of the City of Chemnitz. Rising personnel and material costs are presenting Chemnitz Theatre, like many other cultural institutions nationwide, with major economic challenges.
