Measures for sport, culture, leisure and safety

City Council decides to utilise funds from the Saxony Fund

At its meeting yesterday, Chemnitz City Council passed resolution B-094/2026 to approve measures that will be financed from the lump-sum investment budget for the implementation of the Saxony Fund Act. This is based on funds from the federal government's special fund for infrastructure and climate neutrality, which are passed on to the municipalities via the Free State of Saxony.

A total of around 105.8 million euros will be available for Chemnitz from the lump-sum investment budget until 2036. The funds are to be invested in sports, culture, security, fire protection and leisure and event infrastructure in particular. Funding will be provided in full from the funding programme; it is possible to carry forward unused funds to later funding periods.

The planned measures include the construction of a sports hall in the city centre, the renovation of the roof of the competition hall in the ice sports and leisure centre and the refurbishment of the roof of exhibition hall 1 at the C³ event centres in Chemnitz. Investments are also planned for the opera house and the theatre.
Other projects include the renovation of the fountain in the Stadthallenpark, measures in the zoo, the fire training centre, the ski jumps in Grüna and support for club sports.

The list of measures was supplemented by the "City centre security" project with a total budget of 2.3 million euros. The plan is to install a permanent, controllable
access protection for the city centre - with the aim of further increasing security, particularly at events and gatherings, while at the same time maintaining an open and accessible city centre. The city of Chemnitz had already purchased mobile security elements in previous years, which are used at events in central squares, among other places.

The funding is approved by the State Directorate of Saxony on the basis of the project lists submitted. The funding period runs retroactively from 1 January 2025; the measures must be completed by 30 June 2043. A separate draft resolution on budget implementation will be submitted to the city council at a later date.
