At its meeting yesterday, the Chemnitz City Council passed resolution B-093/2026 to implement road, bridge and school building construction measures in the regional budget. The basis for this is the Saxony Fund Act, with which the Free State of Saxony passes on funds from the nationwide special fund for infrastructure and climate protection to local authorities.
For Chemnitz, a total of around 39.2 million euros will be available for municipal road and bridge construction and for municipal school building construction until 2036. The funding replaces existing funding programmes with a funding rate of 60 percent and is intended to enable important investments in the city's infrastructure. The city's own funds of 40 per cent are to be raised from the municipal budget.
In the area of road and bridge construction, in addition to the renovation of roads, the Falkeplatz bridge, the planning and subsequent realisation of the Südring bridge and other bridges and engineering structures are planned. In addition, investments will be made in structures that require special refurbishment.
In school building construction, the expansion of capacity at the Terra Nova Campus, measures at the cooperation school, fire protection measures at the Josephinen secondary school, the refurbishment of the Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain primary school and further school and gym refurbishments in accordance with the school refurbishment concept will be implemented. The City of Chemnitz wants to continue to react flexibly to developments in pupil numbers, birth rates or the requirements of the State Office for Schools and Education.
As the planned funding is not sufficient to fully cover individual major projects, the City of Chemnitz will enter into talks with the Free State of Saxony for additional funding for the "Brücke Südring" and "Terra Nova Campus - capacity expansion" measures. According to the City of Chemnitz, both projects are of supra-regional importance.
The funding period runs retroactively from 1 January 2025 and measures must be fully completed by 30 June 2043 at the latest. A separate draft resolution on budgetary implementation will be submitted to the City Council at a later date.
