Young Nature Guards Chemnitz

Who are we?

The Young Nature Guards Chemnitz are part of the Saxony-wide programme "Young Nature Guards Saxony" (JuNa). The programme is aimed at children and young people who are interested in nature, the environment and nature conservation and want to become active themselves.

Together, the participants explore the animal, plant and fungal world of their home region, learn to identify species and find out how nature conservation works in practice. But it's not just about observing: The Young Nature Guards lend a hand themselves - for example by building nesting boxes and insect hotels, erecting toad protection fences, collecting rubbish in the forest or with ideas for more climate and environmental protection in everyday life.

What can the children and young people expect?

With the Young Nature Guards, children and young people experience nature with all their senses. They are out and about, exploring habitats and biodiversity and getting to know nature conservation stakeholders from the region. This includes, among other things:

  • Discovering and identifying animals, plants and fungi
  • Observations in forests, meadows and along bodies of water
  • Familiarisation with native biotopes
  • Practical nature conservation work
  • Building and maintaining nesting boxes, feeding stations and insect hotels
  • Creative and craft activities with natural materials
  • Excursions and nature education activities
  • Talks and lectures with nature conservation experts and volunteers

Games, fun and shared experiences are of course not neglected.

In 2019, the Chemnitz Nature Discovery Group was founded at the Chemnitz City Nature Conservation Centre with the aim of facilitating regular extracurricular environmental education programmes. This became part of the Saxony-wide Young Nature Guards project in 2021. Since then, the Chemnitz NATURE Discoverers have also been Young Nature Guards and their educational content is based on the curriculum of the JuNa project. Since 2022, the City of Chemnitz's environmental department has been cooperating with the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND), Landesverband Sachsen e. V. in the implementation of the project. The BUND regional group (RG) Chemnitz has taken over the coordination of the "Young Nature Guards" project in the Chemnitz city area and the management of the Chemnitz NATURE Discoverers working group, including environmental education at the Chemnitz nature conservation station.

Info

The "Young Nature Guards Saxony" programme aims to get children and young people interested in nature conservation and train them to become "experts", both young and old. Perhaps they will later even become active as nature conservation helpers? They are needed everywhere. They observe nature, provide information about it and are an important part of nature conservation in Saxony. For example, nature conservation assistants also provide support with mapping tasks or take on the supervision of special protected areas.
