Reitbahnviertel urban development area
European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
City Council resolution B-133/2008 approved the integrated action plan for the Reitbahnviertel district, including the area demarcation, for inclusion in the Free State of Saxony's Operational Programme for the European Regional Development Fund for the 2007-2013 funding period.
The Reitbahnviertel borders the city centre to the south and is characterised by the early reconstruction phase after the Second World War. To date, this area has received little attention in terms of urban development, which has led to considerable vacancy, building demolition, neglect and misappropriation of public space as well as a massive loss of image.
With the help of ERDF funding, the integrated action plan is to be implemented and the existing efforts and activities of private stakeholders in particular are to be strengthened in order to develop the Reitbahnviertel into a lively residential and working location close to the city centre as a link between the city centre and the university.
Since receiving the grant notification on 24 March 2009, numerous projects have been implemented to date, such as the outdoor area of the early intervention centre in Brauhausstraße, the park avenue in the vicinity of the youth church (Allee des Lichts), the renovation of St. Johannes youth church, the cultural meeting point in the Reitbahnviertel, the childminder's flat and the creative workshop for children.
