Sonnenberg urban development area
European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
By resolution of the City Council B-313/2008, the integrated action plan for Sonnenberg, including the area delimitation, was approved for inclusion in the Operational Programme of the Free State of Saxony for the European Regional Development Fund in the 2007-2013 funding period.
The Sonnenberg district is a traditional working-class neighbourhood from the Wilhelminian era and stretches from the city centre to the Zeisigwald forest. Despite intensive redevelopment efforts, the district still lags considerably behind other neighbourhoods in terms of development. There is a concentration of spatial, traffic and structural problems and the area is also a social hotspot in the city.
With the help of the integrated action plan and the inclusion in ERDF funding, the area is to be upgraded through packages of measures in various fields of action. The associated improvement in the location conditions for housing and the local economy should ultimately lead to a significant image boost for Sonnenberg.
Following receipt of the grant notification on 24 March 2009, a number of individual projects such as the energy-efficient refurbishment of the Sebastian-Bach-Str. 21 day-care centre or the window into the history of the earth (petrified forest) could already be started in 2009.
In addition to projects to improve the urban development situation and infrastructure, projects to improve socioculture and strengthen civil society will also be implemented for the years up to 2013. The Jahnbaude will be refurbished for school and club sports and brought up to the latest technical standards. In the economic field of action, the local economy is being strengthened by supporting small businesses and tradespeople.
