Pleißenbach is getting a new bridge
The structure forms part of Section 2.1 of the ‘New Development along the Pleißenbach Green Corridor’ project and represents a key link in one of the routes connecting the Flemming area with Altendorf. At the same time, the bridge is an essential component of the infrastructure measures required as part of the watercourse restoration project.
The bridge became necessary because the Pleißenbach stream was widened as part of its restoration. Due to this widening and the new course of the stream, the crossing had to be altered and replaced with a new structure. Furthermore, the existing bridge, dating from 1915, was given a rating of 3.9 during the last structural inspection in 2017. This necessitated urgent repair work.
The bridge, which weighs several tonnes, was delivered from the factory in Cuxhaven during the night of 14 to 15 September, lifted off the heavy-duty transporter using a mobile crane, placed on the prepared abutments and assembled. The concrete bridge is around 15 metres long and four metres wide.
The bridge is currently scheduled to open on 30 October. By then, the work to connect the road and footpaths, as well as various remaining tasks on the bridge, should be completed. The total cost of the project is 1.25 million euros and is funded as follows: 66 per cent of the bridge and open-space facilities are funded by urban development grants, whilst 90 per cent of the work on the Pleißenbach is funded under the Waterways and Flood Protection Scheme.
