Winter in Chemnitz

Fire brigade warns against walking on ice

Ice often not load-bearing - Ice surfaces are not cleared - Information for emergencies

The Chemnitz fire brigade warns against walking on ice on rivers, lakes and ponds. Even after several days of frost, frozen bodies of water are often not stable. The danger of ice that is too thin is often underestimated.

According to the green space statutes, it is generally not permitted to walk on ice in the city of Chemnitz. Ice surfaces are also not authorised.

Dangers could include currents under the ice that are not visible. Dangerous cavities can form, especially in flowing waters or fluctuating water levels. Parents and guardians are asked to inform children about the existing risks.

Public sports facilities such as the Jutta Müller Ice Sports Centre Chemnitz can be used for sports activities in winter.

If an emergency nevertheless occurs, the fire brigade should be alerted immediately by dialling 112. Helpers should lie flat on their stomachs to distribute their own weight over a larger area. Once you have collapsed in the ice, it is important to remain calm. Rapid movement cools the body more quickly and there is an acute risk of death. Rescue of affected persons must be as gentle as possible. They should be laid flat and only passively warmed up again using blankets or rescue sheets. Sitting up or active movement should be avoided.

Warning from the state dam administration

The warning also applies to reservoirs, as the State Reservoir Administration of the Free State of Saxony points out. The state dam administration has produced a brochure on the subject of ice hazards.
