Youth welfare in criminal proceedings

Youth welfare in criminal proceedings is a service offered by the Social Services Department of the Youth Welfare Office for young people aged 14 to 21 who have committed offences. Its task is to
- to support the young people concerned and their relatives during the proceedings,
- to help with difficulties arising from the proceedings, for example in the family, among friends or at work or school,
- to refer them to further counselling centres if necessary,
- talk to the young person about their development and their particular circumstances,
- take part in the court hearing and provide a socio-educational statement, and
- to show the young person ways in which they can fulfil instructions imposed by the court.
Discussions with social workers are subject to the principle of confidentiality.
