Adoption is the act of taking a child into one’s care and the legal establishment of a new parent-child relationship.
Adoption placement is the process of matching children under the age of 18 with people who wish to adopt a child. The child’s best interests are the primary consideration.
Adoption placement is carried out by the Youth Welfare Office, Social Services Department.
The services include:
- discreet counselling for parents who wish to place their child for adoption
- providing prospective adoptive parents with information on the adoption placement process
- Counselling and assessment of prospective adoptive parents
- Support before, during and after the adoption
- Counselling and support for the adoption of stepchildren
- Counselling and support for the mutual search between adoptees and birth families
The following may contact the adoption agency:
- Mothers and fathers who intend to place their child for adoption
- Prospective adoptive parents
- Adoptive families, even after the adoption has taken place
- Adoptees, e.g. when searching for their birth family
- Parents, even after placing their child for adoption
In addition, anyone interested is welcome to contact the staff at the adoption agency with any questions or issues relating to adoption.
