Übersichtsplan zum EFRE-Gebiet Chemnitz-Altchemnitz

The ERDF-funded Altchemnitz area is located close to the city centre to the south of the Reitbahn district between the Chemnitz river and the Chemnitz-Aue railway line. It covers around 112 hectares with a population of around 860.

Initial urban development situation

Altchemnitz is characterised by former commercial and industrial buildings from different periods of construction, many of which are monuments and evidence of industrial culture. In addition to already well-developed sites such as the Wirkbau, many of these buildings are still standing or are only slightly utilised, in some cases in poor condition. At the same time, the area has high development potential for sustainable reutilisation. The proximity to the TU Campus and the Smart Systems Campus offers particular opportunities.

Social, economic and ecological situation

The social situation largely corresponds to the urban average. The proportion of housing is low. The economy is dominated by small businesses, with hardly any opportunities for larger companies to settle here. High vacancy rates, contaminated sites and a lack of green structures pose ecological challenges. Streets are often no longer designed in a contemporary way and energy potential remains unutilised.

Objectives and projects

ERDF funding in the Altchemnitz area is focussed on

  • Energy renovation and utilisation of renewable energies,
  • Revitalisation of brownfield sites and safeguarding industrial heritage buildings,
  • Economic revitalisation through support for small businesses,
  • Development of the area as a creative neighbourhood close to the city centre at the interface of industrial heritage and science.

In the ERDF area of Altchemnitz, 2 ERDF projects are currently being implemented in addition to urban development measures. ERDF funding of €1.58 million is available for this until the end of 2027.
